Dispelling the Higher Education Myths at Coleg Gwent

4 February 2025

Thinking about higher education (university level courses) but feeling overwhelmed by all the myths you’ve heard? Don’t worry – we’re here to set the record straight.

“It’s too expensive!”

Before you start counting pennies, let’s bust this myth. Yes, there are costs, but you can apply for a tuition fee loan from Student Finance Wales to cover the fees.

Once you’ve finished your course, repayments will only start once you’re earning over £31,395 a year. If you’re not working or taking a break – you don’t have to pay.

There are also loads of grants, bursaries, and other subsidies out there to help cover living costs while you study. Head to our website for all the details.

“I can’t study and balance work or family life!”

Yes, that’s wrong! Most of our university level courses run just 2-3 days a week. So, whether you’re juggling part-time work, raising a family, or have other commitments, you’ve got plenty of flexibility.

“Higher education is only for young people.”

Absolutely not! Lots of adults dive back into education later on in life – whether it’s to climb the career ladder, change careers, or simply learn something they’re passionate about. At Coleg Gwent, you’ll meet loads of students of all ages working towards their degree, who prove it’s never too late to learn.

“You need A levels to study a higher education course.”

Not true. Of course, we’ve got entry requirements, but they’re not set in stone. If you have work experience or personal achievements, get in touch as you might still meet the entry requirements. Our friendly Higher Education team can help you decide on your next steps.

“You can’t get a full degree at college.”

You can. Many of our courses start with a two-year HNC/HND or foundation degree. Then, you can progress to study a one-year “top-up” to achieve a full honours degree. If your course is accredited by a university, you even get the chance to attend the graduation ceremony.

“It’s hard to apply.”

Applying is so easy, it’ll take you less time than making a cup of tea. No complicated essays or personal statements – just a quick form with your details directly on our website.

“Courses aren’t real degrees if they’re at a further education college.”

This is false. Our courses are accredited by universities like the University of South Wales, Cardiff Met, Aberystwyth University and Pearson. So, you’ll earn a recognised degree and you get to stay local. Plus, you’ll have access to all the partner universities’ facilities and resources.

Ready to make your passion a profession? We’re here to help every step of the way!
