In a nutshell
The Counterbalance Lift Truck (often referred to as a forklift) operator training course will give you the skills to operate the lift truck safely and efficiently, carry out a pre-use inspection, and recall and explain the causes of lift truck and load instability.
Upon successful completion you will be awarded with an RTITB accredited licence, allowing you to drive machines up to 5 tonnes in weight.
This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).

Course content
Throughout the course you will cover the following topic areas:
- Operator responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 & LOLER 98
- Operators Safety code
- Re-charging of Diesel, Gas or Electric Counterbalance Forklift
- Pre-use checks
- Factors affecting stability
- Motive and hydraulic controls of the Counterbalance Forklift
- Manoeuvring the Forklift Truck in open and confined areas
- Stacking at different levels
- De-stacking with laden and un-laden pallets
- Working in and out of racking with the Counterbalance Forklift
You will be required to pass a theory test and practical operator assessment to successfully complete the course.
Entry Requirements
A basic level of English reading and writing skills.
Safety boots are advised, but not mandatory. As some training is completed outdoors you are advised to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
