In a nutshell
This course will allow you to drive LGV category C (Class 2) vehicles that exceed 7.5 tonne in gross weight.
There is no weight restriction on this category – providing a vehicle is rigid (i.e. the cab does not detach from the trailer) it can be driven on an LGV C licence.
Upon completion, you may decide to later upgrade to an LGV CE (Class 1) articulated licence.
This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).
This course is for...
... those aged 19 +, living in Wales, employed, and earning less than £32,371 per year
... Anyone that already holds a car driving licence. You do not need to have held this for a certain period of time.
... Competent drivers looking to upskill and pursue a career in the transport industry as a large goods vehicle driver.
Course content
Practical driver training is completed on a 1-to-1 basis. During this time, you will learn how to defect check, drive and manoeuvre a large goods vehicle to the required standard.
Course Duration: 2.5 days including your practical test
The practical test is made up of two parts:
- an ‘S shaped’ reverse exercise into a loading bay
- a 60 minute on-the-road drive
You will return for an additional day to complete your Driver CPC Module 4 qualification, which you will require in order to use your LGV licence for work purposes.
The training options will depend on where you live as we work with two training providers to deliver this course, Heads of the Valley and Monex Academy.
If you have a preference please indicate this on your application.
Entry Requirements
Prior to practical training, you will need to:
- complete a medical assessment in order to apply for your provisional licence
- pass the relevant LGV theory tests
These elements will be arranged on your behalf.
