In a nutshell
This is a nationally recognised qualification in the installation and maintenance of small thermal hot water systems. The qualification is developed from the National Occupational Standards and is recognised by the Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS) registration bodies as an acceptable qualification to join one of their respective schemes.
BPEC is a specialised provider of industry recognised qualifications, assessments, training courses and learning materials.
This course is available as part of a Personal Learning Account (PLA). PLA is an initiative from the Welsh Government which offers people the chance to access free, part-time courses with flexible and convenient learning that fits around their existing lifestyle (subject to eligibility).

Course content
This Level 3 qualification is ideal if you're an experienced plumber or engineer who wants to install and maintain this type of environmental technology. It consists of 5 mandatory units that comprise of practical and theoretical elements. ALL units must be achieved to achieve the overall qualification.
- Know the requirements to install, commission and handover solar thermal hot water systems
- Install, commission and handover ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems
- Know the requirements to inspect, service and maintain ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems
- Inspect, service and maintain ‘active’ solar thermal hot water systems
Assessments consist of a combination of practical and theory examinations.
Successful completion of this qualification proves that learners are competent to install, commission, decommission service and maintain solar thermal hot water systems and therefore will extend career opportunities in the emerging technologies field.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have a minimum NVQ level 2/3 qualification in plumbing or conventional heating engineering
OR demonstrable evidence of at least 3 years relevant experience

This qualification acts as Continuing Professional Development for qualified plumbers and mechanical engineers who wish to broaden their skills. It provides in-depth knowledge of Solar Thermal Heating, and the competence to install and maintain in the home environment.
