In a nutshell
Our HNC Level 4 Mechanical Engineering has been designed in consultation with industry and is intended to link to local industry as much as possible, both in its content and in the mode of attendance.
The aim is to produce a highly qualified and knowledgeable engineer who can meet the requirements of the world of work. This is a specialist vocational programme with a strong work related emphasis.
The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector and is nationally recognised by employers, plus allows for further study at degree level and beyond.

Course content
The course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector.
You will study units including:
Year 1
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Maths
- Engineering Science
- Mechanical Principles
Year 2
- Managing a Professional Eng. Project
- Materials, Properties & Testing
- Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines
- Electro, Pnuematic & Hydraulic Systems
You will learn through a mixture of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions.
Assessment
Learners will be assessed via mainly coursework and few examinations.
Entry Requirements
You would usually need at least one of the following:
- A relevant BTEC Level 3 profile of Merit/Merit
- CC at A Level
- CC grades at A Level plus C in Welsh Baccalaureate
Plus: GCSE passes in three subjects at grade C or above to include Maths and English Language (or equivalent).
Mature students with relevant industry experience who do not meet the academic qualifications will be considered individually via interview.
Additional information
Upon completion, you can progress onto a Level 5 HND in Mechanical Engineering or the first/second year of a university degree programme.
Alternatively, you can go into technician engineering positions.
You will attend college eight hours per week, 30 weeks per year.
