Applicants without the minimum GCSEs, will be considered based on previous experience or other qualifications.

What will I be doing?
A career in beauty therapy offers a rewarding blend of creativity, personal interaction, and skill development. Professionals in this field provide a variety of services, including skincare treatments, makeup application, nail care, and hair removal, helping clients look and feel their best. With the beauty industry constantly evolving, this career path offers dynamic opportunities for growth and the chance to make a positive impact on individuals’ self-esteem and confidence.
You’ll learn about client consultations and units such as:
- Manicure and Handcare
- Pedicure and Footcare
- Skin care and facial work
- Retailing and Product Promotion
- Reception and Customer Service
- Nail art
- Make up design and application
- Eye treatments to include eyelash and brow tinting and eyebrow shaping
- Waxing - face and body
- Additional units may include permanent lashes and nail enhancements
You will work on developing your skills in a range of practical and theory sessions, working towards assessments in both your skills and understanding of the sector. There are several online exams as well as a range of practical assessments with clients.
In addition to your course, you’ll be encouraged to participate in:
- In house college competitions
- Inspiring Skills Wales and UK/World Skills
- Community activities
- Product and treatment awareness days in industry
What is expected of me?
To enrol on this course, you will need a minimum of 3 GCSEs grade D or above to include either Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh 1st Language; or an appropriate Level 1 Diploma qualification in the relevant vocational area to include either GCSE Maths/Numeracy or English/Welsh 1st Language grade.
Applicants without the minimum GCSEs, will be considered based on previous experience or other qualifications.
Based on your GCSE results, you will be advised if you are more suited to one of 2 potential assessment routes - the NVQ/VRQ Level 2 Diploma or the Level 2 Technical Diploma qualification. Your tutor will discuss this with you during induction.
Beauty Therapy is a sector which is based on hands-on practice, therefore working in treatment rooms, on other learners and with clients is a large part of the course.
What comes next?
NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or Complementary Therapies.

As a condition of your place on this course, you will be expected to purchase the appropriate kit, from our approved supplier, costing approximately £86 subject to review/inflationary price increase.
To reflect industry expectations, you will be required to wear a Coleg Gwent salon uniform which is to be ordered from our approved supplier. Details on how to order your uniform, with supplier payment options, can be obtained from your Head of School, Lecturer or Technician. The price for 2024/2025 is around £45, subject to inflationary price increase. As part of the professional practice, any hair must be neatly tied back of the face, and a wedding ring is the only jewellery permitted in the salon.
Additional costs could occur during the year for educational visits.
