The FdSc Equine Studies course includes a distinctive theoretical and practical mix of lectures studying all aspects of the horse in relation to care, management, breeding, competition and business.

What will I be doing?
A number of science modules will ease you into a BSc equine courses if you wish to progress on successful graduation. As the Usk Campus equine facilities also include a BHS examination centre there will be the potential to sit BHS examinations at the college.
You will be taught through a balanced programme of lectures, seminars, workshops, practicals, field visits and lab work. Assessment methods may take various forms such as essays, practical exercises, oral presentations, exams, lab reports, worksheets, case studies, practical reports, portfolios, magazine articles, webpages and podcasts.
You will achieve a Foundation Degree which is equivalent to the first two years of study on a degree programme (Level 4 and Level 5).

Mature students (aged 21+) will be dealt with on an individual basis and whilst no formal qualifications are required, an interest in horses and a desire to learn is essential.
The usual timetable for this course runs over two days per week and students will be expected to attend all sessions. There will be an expectation for students to complete at least 20 hours per week of independent study and research. In addition to this there will be a work placement module of which the student will be expected to source their own placement(s) to cover the required six weeks, tutor guidance will be available if necessary.
What comes next?
Students who successfully complete the Foundation Degree are automatically offered entry into the second year of a suitable degree programme at Aberystwyth University. The University will also offer students who demonstrate consistently good performance entry into the final year of a suitable degree programme.
Your degree in equine studies will provide an excellent basis for a career in the following:

Additional Costs:
Year 1
For Health and Safety you will need to purchase suitable clothing and footwear to work on the yard for practicals:
Riding hat (to current BHS standards), boots, jodhpurs and gloves (costs will vary).
You will also need to purchase a dissection kit and lab coat (approximately £20 each).
