In a nutshell

This qualification is designed to enable learners to develop their skills to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) in a range of everyday situations. The qualification will allow learners to participate in longer and more varied conversations than at Level 1. The course will develop communication in BSL about real life, routine, and daily experiences. The learner will be able to deal with most routine communication and have enough understanding of grammar to cope with some non-routine communication.

Those who wish to achieve language skills at an intermediate level to improve communication with Deaf people, are Deaf and wish to gain a qualification in their native language

This is the ideal progression from a Level 1 study in BSL.

Course content

Learning British Sign Language, like any other second language, needs commitment and dedication in order to effectively gain the skill required. You will be required to study independently outside of classroom hours, as well as part of a group in a classroom setting.

You’ll be studying three mandatory units of the course:

BSL Receptive Skills

BSL productive skills

BSL conversational skills

All three units must be completed in order to gain the qualification. This qualification is designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of themes including, Eversday Conversation, Eating and Drinking, Spending and Shopping, and Travel and holidays.

You will be assessed through practical sessions in the classroom, as well as three formal assessments at the end of the course. You will be required to have a video recorded conversation, sit a multiple-choice receptive paper, and give a presentation through the use of BSL.

On completion, you’ll achieve the Signature Level 2 Award in British Sign Language.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal requirements. However, Learners will be required to have basic knowledge in BSL before commencing the course as such you may be subject to an entry interview where the tutor can assess your BSL skills.

Additional information

After this course, you could move on to the Signature Level 3 Award in British Sign Language.
