In a nutshell

This course is designed to help you undertake various welding techniques and procedures safely, giving you an in-depth understanding of the welding processes, their applications and the equipment, materials and consumables used, so you can work to engineering industry-recognised specifications and standards.

This course is for...

… Anyone looking at a career in engineering or manufacturing as a welder.

Course content

The course covers the Metal Active/Inert Gas Shielding (MAGS/MIGS), Manual Metal Arc (MMA) and Tungsten Active/Inert Gas Shielding (TAGS/TIGS) welding processes, and you’ll need to complete a range of welded joints in various welding positions to the BSEN 4872 welding standard. These welded joints will then undergo various destructive tests before being visually assessed by the assessor.

You’ll learn how to recognise and identify basic welding defects, how to rectify and prevent any faults that can occur, and how to adjust and set the conditions for welding in line with relevant specifications and weld procedures.

You’ll also need to prepare for welding by obtaining the necessary job instructions, materials, tools, equipment and any documentation, and check and inspect the welding equipment to make sure it’s in a safe working condition and suitable for the welding to be undertaken.

On completing this course, you could move on to NVQ Fabrication & Welding Level 2 or City & Guilds Advanced Welding Level 2.

Entry Requirements

The course is intended for those aged 19 or over, and while there are no formal entry requirements you should be enthusiastic about fabrication & welding.

Additional information

You’ll need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (steel toe cap boots and fire retardant overalls).
