A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above or an appropriate Level 2 Diploma qualification and GCSE Maths at Grade B.
In a nutshell
This full-time one-year qualification is designed to allow you to develop the higher-level skills needed to progress to the second year for BTEC National Extended Diploma (equivalent to three A-Levels), which enable for university study, or apprenticeship at Level 4 or higher, or employment at a technical or professional level within the engineering industry.

What will I be doing?
You’ll study units such as:
- Unit 1: Engineering principles, covering mathematics, mechanical and electrical principles
- Unit 2: Delivery of engineering processes safely as a team
- Unit 3: Engineering product design and manufacture
- Unit 4: Applied commercial and quality principles in engineering
- Unit 10: Computer aided design in engineering
- Unit 25: Mechanical behaviour of metallic materials
- Unit 41: Manufacturing secondary machining processes
You’ll be assessed through assignments, exams/tests, and practical work. Upon completion, you’ll achieve:
- BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical)
- Skills Activities
- Maths and English
- Other relevant qualifications to enhance your skill set
What is expected of me?
To enrol, you’ll need:
- a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Mathematics at Grade B, English/Welsh First Language at Grade C and Science at Grade C
or
- an appropriate Level 2 Diploma qualification at Merit Grade and GCSE Maths at Grade B and English/Welsh First Language at Grade C or above.
What comes next?
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical) in the second year; then further to HNC Engineering at Coleg Gwent or other higher education study in a university, or an apprenticeship or employment in the engineering sector.
