What will I be doing?
The course is divided into 5 units. The first 2 units will be studied in year 1 and will lead to the AS qualification.
Year 1 – AS Level
- Unit 1: Motion, energy and matter
- Unit 2: Electricity and light
Year 2 – A Level
- Unit 3: Oscillations and nuclei
- Unit 4: Fields and options
- Unit 5: Practical examination
Although many of the topics within each module will have been introduced at GCSE level, they’ll be revised thoroughly before being extended to full A Level standard. The physics specification now includes particle physics, lasers and astrophysics.
Upon completion, you’ll achieve:
- AS Level Physics
- A Level Physics
- Skills activities
- English and Maths
What is expected of me?
To enter this course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, to include English/Welsh First Language, a Grade B or above in Maths, a Grade B or above in Physics or BB or above in Additional Science
Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there’s an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.
What comes next?
A Level Physics is accepted as an entry qualification to a surprisingly wide range of university degree courses, from accountancy to veterinary science as well as to the more obviously physics-based courses, such as acoustics, astronomy, engineering (civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical, production etc.) and ophthalmic optics.
It also prepares you for employment in a wide variety of fields.
