To enter this course, you will need a minimum of GCSEs including Maths/Maths Numeracy, English Language and Science at Grade B or above. Geography GCSE at Grade B or above would be desirable, but it is not essential.
In a nutshell
This A Level in Geology course equips all learners with all the fundamental and practical skills needed to equip them with fundamental knowledge and develop scientific literacy in geology. Looking at topics that range from mineralogy to fossils and even the extraction of rocks, this course explores the traditional scientific dimensions of geology, but also the more practical and human applications of geology.

What will I be doing?
The Geology A Level is a linear course split over two years. Across the two years you will study:
- Component 1: Fundamentals of Geology
- Component 2: Scientific Literacy in Geology
- Component 3: Practical Skills in Geology
Components 1, 2 and 3 are all examined. In addition, there is Component 4 which is a ‘Practical Endorsement in Geology’ which is reported separately and is completed as part of your class and field-based practicals.
What is expected of me?
To enter this course, you will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs including Maths/Maths Numeracy, English Language and Science at Grade B or above. Geography GCSE at Grade B or above would be desirable, but it is not essential.
Full commitment to attendance is required, as is respect for others, enthusiasm for the subject and self-motivation. You’ll be continually assessed and there is an expectation that you’ll continue your studies and coursework during your own time.
What comes next?
Following completion of your Geology A Level, a number of university courses are available in Earth Science, Geochemistry and Geological studies.
