Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourselves and your journey at Coleg Gwent?
Kyle: “I had a life-saving kidney transplant from my dad in December 2011. Since then, I’ve been committed to raising awareness about organ donation through sports. My journey into education began when I started training with the Transplant Wales football team and realised they didn’t have a massage or physiotherapy supporter. Wanting to help, I enrolled in the part-time Level 3 Sports Massage course at Coleg Gwent.”
Elliott: “After experiencing challenges while on dialysis in the summer of 2023, I wanted a fresh start and a new career. I received my kidney transplant in December 2023 and joined the Transplant Wales football team to keep active. It was then that I discovered my passion for sports and knew I wanted to make it my career. Soon after, I joined Coleg Gwent and enrolled on the Level 4 Sports Massage course. “
Q: What were some of the notable achievements or challenges you faced during your time at Coleg Gwent?
Kyle: “I was initially reluctant to return to education as an adult after being out of it for so long. But I wanted to help my team and support them to be the best players they could be. I’ve now completed my Level 3 course and progressed to Level 4. I was also selected to represent Wales as part of the Transplant Wales Football team that participated in the first Transplant World Cup last year. In April, we’re also one of six countries going to the European Transplant Football Championship in Oxford to compete again!”
Elliott: “Last year, I was lucky enough to be selected for the Welsh transplant football team alongside Kyle to play in a World Cup tournament in Italy. It was an incredible experience. Having completed my Level 3 course, I’ve already started my own business and aim to gain more experience and knowledge through my studies.”
Q: What are your future goals and aspirations?
Kyle: “My next goal is to take on the Foundation Degree in Sports Conditioning, Rehabilitation, and Massage Conditioning and eventually start my own business. I’ve found something that I’m really passionate about. Playing football and being part of the Transplant Wales football team has been a huge part of my recovery and personal growth. I’m excited for what lies ahead.”
Elliott: “I’m eager to continue growing my business and gain more experience in the field. I’m looking forward to learning more and achieving my dreams in the world of sports. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m looking forward to the future.”
Q: How has Coleg Gwent supported you in your journey?
Kyle: “The support from my tutors at Coleg Gwent has been incredible. They’ve gone above and beyond to ensure my success, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Elliott: “Coleg Gwent has played a crucial role in preparing me for my future career. The college has provided me with the skills and confidence needed to succeed, and I’m very thankful for that.”
Congratulations to Kyle and Elliott on their outstanding achievements both on and off the field.
