A partnership that’s making waves

14 May 2024

At Coleg Gwent, we’re dedicated to creating opportunities for all our learners to thrive, regardless of their abilities or the challenges they may face. One example of this commitment is the inspiring partnership between our ILS team at our Crosskeys campus and a local not-for-profit organisation, Multi-sport Social Health & Wellbeing.

It all started when ILS Lecturer Andrea Hale noticed a company called Multi-sport Social Health & Wellbeing at a local community event and saw potential in their flexible activities. The company provides a variety of dance and sporting activities within the community for those with learning disabilities and additional needs.

Recognising the need to engage our learners in exercise and social activities, Andrea wasted no time in reaching out to them.

After a taster session with the learners, it was clear that they could offer exactly what the ILS team were looking for.  Since then, the impact of the partnership has been nothing short of amazing. By working closely with the company, the ILS team has been able to offer their learners the opportunity to get involved in football, rugby, Zumba, swimming, rock climbing and surfing.

Sarah Louise Davies, ILS Lead has seen a real change in the learners, she explains: “It’s given them such a confidence boost, allows them to socialise outside of college and has got them excited about exercise. We’ve also found that it’s empowered parents to take them to these activities during half terms and holidays.”

One learner said: “It was something different to do, a good experience.” Another said: “It was fun, an opportunity to do something different which I wouldn’t get anywhere else.”

ILS Partnership

The impact of this partnership isn’t just limited to the college, it’s also supported the wider community. Multi-sport Social Health & Wellbeing managed to secure £96,0000 worth of lottery funding with the support of the ILS team and their learners. Together they put together a bid for the funding, which included positive learner testimonials. This money has now been put back into improving their facilities and expanding the range of activities for both our learners and members of the community.

At Coleg Gwent, we strongly believe that collaboration and inclusivity are powerful tools that can be used to create positive and meaningful change. Our ILS team’s partnership with Multi-sport Social Health & Wellbeing is a shining example of our commitment to providing enriching experiences that empower learners of all abilities to reach their full potential.
