Coleg Gwent students have competed against hundreds across the country as part of Skills Competition Wales. This year, 113 students demonstrated their ability, competence and knowledge, bringing home a combined total of 17 medals in gold, silver and bronze categories.
Skills Competition Wales offers students, trainees and apprentices a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.
Funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations, it consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills and the needs of the Welsh economy.
Skills Competition Manager, Richard Wheeler, explained “Taking part in skills competitions is not only a great way to improve your technical skill but also those key employability skills that are needed in competition such as performing under pressure, time management, planning and problem solving.
These skills will naturally be tested during competition and with the support of your Coleg Gwent tutors can be practiced along with the technical skill in the lead up to competition. Coleg Gwent are working hard to embed competitions into curriculum and raise the standard across its provision from competence to excellence.”
Through Skills Competition Wales, students can build their confidence, gain valuable experience, learn from industry experts, and ultimately become more employable after college. Including Skills Competition Wales on your CV will make you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs, and we’ve no doubt our students will go far in their future careers!
