Adult Learners' Week 2018 - Alice's story

Meet Alice Roberts, 38, from Cwmbran. Alice decided to retrain as a hairdresser seven years ago at Coleg Gwent.

“Knowing I was too old to get a government funded apprenticeship, I applied to originally study part time. I soon realised during my interview that part time study wasn’t for me, I would prefer to get as much practice as I could because I was doing a vocational course. It was the best decision I have ever made”, said Alice.

But she didn’t stop there. Once she had completed her hairdressing training, Alice’s customers kept asking her if she could do eyebrows and nails too.

“I had to say no as I wasn’t qualified which got me thinking, being a hairdresser and a beautician sounds great! So I enrolled at Pontypool campus to do Level 2 Beauty“, continued Alice.

Not only gaining two qualifications under her belt, student Alice Robert also won two awards at this year’s Coleg Gwent Student Excellence awards including Dermalogica Student of the Year.

Outside of college, Alice enjoys volunteering and giving back to the community. But what wise words does she have for adults wishing to study at college?

“Give it a go! Coming back to education as an adult or a mature student is a scary thing but there are study skills workshops available and your tutors can help you.

“Even if you choose not to study full time, try a part time course or evening class or anything! The friendship and company is rewarding and the skills you learn will help you grow as a person.”
